A Blues In Drag
This piece was included in the gallery show “These Days”, a collaboration with photographer Bill Webb, Jr. of Memphis, Tennessee. Bill’s image of the lone, aging gas pump brings me again to my joy of random road trips on the back roads. Roads that are equally abandoned. I prefer these sights to the flash and glamor of big cities. When I hit the road it is a place where I am completely free. For this piece I was in pursuit of the tire remnants you see of the side of the road. Once out to collect them though I realized it was not the worth the risk of my life nor my friend’s life to pull over to collect them. So we grabbed some fried chicken and beer and had a picnic at a park on the river instead. Amazingly when my friend got home he found the amazing busted tire I ended up using for this piece. The delicate paper birds flying out of it represent the freedom I feel during aimless adventures on the back roads. To me it is my version of having the ability to fly. The song listed below conjures similar imagery in my imagination. The careful choice of notes, how they drift through each other, the underlying sounds weaving in an out…that all resembles birds gliding with ease through the wind.
Found tire, recycled cotton paper, bailing wire. Installation services offered for free to local purchases only. If you would like to purchase the photograph in the images please contact me. It will cost an additional $150.00.
